Visitor’s code

To ensure a safe and happy day out at Tilgate Zoo for visitors and animals alike, our visitor’s code outlines some simple rules that we ask everyone to follow.

Purchase a valid ticket

You can buy tickets online or at the ticket office.  All members of a group must have a valid ticket, including children under two and carers. Carer tickets are only valid on production of an official letter of confirmation such as DLA/PIP or diagnosis, or a Compass Card, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, Carers Support Card or similar recognised scheme.

If you booked online, all members of your group must arrive together and show your printed or digital booking confirmation. Pre-booked tickets are non-transferable, and refunds will not be given unless the zoo is closed due to extreme weather or other unforeseen event.

Do not feed the animals

All our animals receive a specially prepared diet and unsuitable foods could make them unwell. Unauthorised feeding and dropping litter could put you and the animals at risk.

Respect the animals

Remember that you are visitors to their home. Please do not cause distress or alarm with inconsiderate behaviour.

Do not:

  • run or shout near the aviaries and enclosures. Too much noise can scare the animals
  • chase or tease the animals. Stress can make animals unwell

Noise and standards of behaviour must remain at an acceptable level as judged appropriate by zoo staff. We reserve the right to ask any individual or group that causes a nuisance to our animals, or to other visitors, to leave without a refund of the entrance fee.

Do not climb on, sit on or cross the fences or gates

Fences and gates are in place for your safety and the safety of our animals. Do not reach into animal enclosures. Although our animals are captive bred, they are not tame and may bite.

No scooters, roller skates, skateboards or ball games

Due to the nature of the zoo environment we ask that you keep these activities and corresponding equipment out of the zoo. There is a scooter park next to the entrance where items can be left and collected on exit.

No dogs or other pets

Dogs and other pets are not allowed into the zoo. This could put both our animals and your pets at risk.

Assistance dogs are allowed access, but only with the appropriate certification which must be shown upon entry. Visit our access page for further information on assistance dogs.

No smoking

We operate a no smoking policy in the zoo including the use of electronic cigarettes or vapes.

No re-entry

Once you have left the zoo there is no re-entry without purchasing another ticket.
